High school graduation is only start, former governor tells Montana conference

If America wants to reverse its falling educational rankings in the world, it should look first to what’s been most neglected: The nation’s high schools and high school graduation rates, a former West Virginia governor said here Monday.

"We need to be telling (students) high school is not the finish line, it’s the start," said Bob Wise, now president of the Alliance for Excellent Education. "They’re going to be needing some sort of postsecondary experience.

"But you have to finish high school in order to get to the next point."

Wise, who also served nine terms in Congress, is the keynote speaker at the first statewide conference for Graduation Matters Montana, a state initiative to reduce high school dropout rates in Montana. The two-day conference in Helena began Monday.
