Nonprofits generate billions for state economy

The Idaho Nonprofit Economic Impact Report indicates the state’s 3,183 reporting nonprofit organizations add $2 billion to Idaho’s gross state product each year. Close to 50,000 employees work for nonprofits, a number on par with the volume employed by the accommodation and food services sector. These employees earn an average of $43,350 a year.

The nonprofit center’s executive director, Lynn Hoffmann, said her group commissioned the study because the economic importance of the sector had never been quantified and slips by unnoticed.

"Sometimes, especially when the economy is tough, it’s easy to say ‘Nonprofits are nice to have, but if we can’t contribute right now that’s okay,’" she said. "But I think if we ignore nonprofit organizations or are not as generous as we need to be to keep nonprofits going, the economy will feel that impact."
