Montana gets low marks for manufacturing – high marks for tax climate

Montana got a "D" on a new state-by-state manufacturing report card and garnered an "F" in productivity-innovation and "global reach" categories.

"The composition of manufacturing in Montana is very different than the national average. You are just not comparing the same industries."

At the same time, the state earned an "A" for its tax climate, a hot topic in an election year.

The 2012 Manufacturing and Logistics Report Card was issued by the Center for Business and Economic Research at Ball State University. The states with the best grades were largely in the rust belt: Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Kansas and Iowa. The worst grades landed out West: Alaska, Hawaii, New Mexico and Nevada.
