Ford joins top brands in push for plant-based plastics

Ford is joining with some of the nation’s top consumer companies to try to figure out how to make more plastics from plants and fibers, not oil.

Ford says it is hooking up with Coca-Cola, H.J. Heinz, Nike and Procter & Gamble to create a collaborative to accelerate the development and use of 100% plant-based materials and fiber when it comes to the plastic known in industry jargon as PET. It stands for polyethylene terephthalate — the durable, lightweight plastic that shows up in everything from plastic bottles to car-seat fabric.
