Montana Campus Compact wins Grant to Support September 11th Day of Community Service

Montana Campus Compact (MTCC), a statewide coalition of
college and universities, has been awarded a $75,000 September 11th
National Day of Service and Remembrance grant from the Corporation for
National and Community Service (CNCS).

The grant will support local projects and trainings, in the Northern Rocky
Mountain region, led by MTCC and the American Red Cross. Specifically, it
will allow project managers and site supervisors to train 2,000 college
students and local citizens to prepare for and respond to disasters in
rural areas. Trainings will occur on at least 15 college campuses in
Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wyoming.

"We are thrilled to be able to help students meet their civic
responsibilities and help communities address the pressing needs that
occur when disasters strike," said Jane Karas, Chair of MTCC’s board of
Directors and President at Flathead Valley Community College, "we are
proud that our network has been entrusted with these funds and know our
faculty, students, and volunteers will get great things done for our state
and region."

The grant serves as a forward-looking tribute to the Americans lost in the
terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. It is also a reminder about the
important of community service in response to tragedy. By encouraging
Americans to participate in service activities on the 9/11 anniversary,
the grant will be a productive and respectful way to honor those who
perished and rekindle the spirit of unity and compassion that swept our
nation after 9/11 to help meet the challenges we face today.

Funded organizations are challenged to bring more Americans together in
volunteer service that meets vital community needs. MTCC will choose to
engage college students and others in the effort.

"College students regularly prove that they have the energy, talent, and
ambition to make a big difference in our communities," said Dean McGovern,
MTCC executive director, "this award is a testament to the strength of the
students and citizens of Montana."

The Montana Campus Compact is Montana’s largest higher education network.
