Montana Career Opportunity – Ecology GIS Project Manager – The Montana Natural Heritage Program

The Montana Natural Heritage Program (NHP) is recruiting an Ecology GIS Project Manager in our Helena, Montana office to oversee the production and quality assurance/quality control of National Wetland Inventory (NWI) mapping currently being undertaken by a staff of 5-7 ecologist/photo interpreters.

S/he will also take the lead on developing and managing databases to support ecological classification and analysis projects and for making data available to support effective resource management and conservation.

This position requires a strong background in database management and GIS, demonstrated experience managing large or complex GIS production projects, and well-developed photointerpretation, analysis, statistical, and geodatabase skills. The incumbent will be expected to work with federal, state and local GIS users, as well as natural resource managers with only a basic knowledge of GIS. Training or experience in the natural sciences or resource management is essential.

S/he will have significant responsibility for quality assurance and quality control of wetland mapping projects, and will assume supervisory responsibility for mapping staff after becoming familiar with the position and the production routines.

S/he may accompany field crews on specific surveys to gain familiarity with the resources being mapped, but field work is not a significant component of this position. This is a full-time position with benefits, renewable annually depending on funding and performance. Starting salary range is $42,000 to $44,000, DOQ.
