Seeing the signs: Class teaches children to communicate before they can talk

It’s not a new concept, but it’s only recently gaining popularity. Children can communicate before they can talk. With sign language. Amy Yockey, a licensed speech therapist, teaches a baby sign language class at Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital.

"It goes back to that early building of confidence in being a successful communicator," she said. "It just gives them a sense of control and a sense of power that helps them build that early confidence."

Yockey’s newest class started Wednesday night. After the group of mothers, children and one father took their seats in the rehabilitation center’s waiting room, Yockey jumped right in. She quickly explained the course before saying it was time to sing.
