University of Montana launches global leadership program

University of Montana freshman Ashley Gostnell was a 3-year-old the last time she traveled outside the United States.

And she only got to Canada.

Now, Gostnell is one of 140 freshmen charged with approaching education from a global perspective. On Tuesday, UM launched its Global Leadership Initiative http://www.umt.edu/gli/ , a major educational component of the university’s new strategic plan implemented under the supervision of President Royce Engstrom.

The event highlighted national speakers, including Andre Lewis, the U.S. Department of Education’s deputy assistant secretary for international and foreign language education, and Deborah McWhinney, chief operating officer for Citi Global Enterprise Payments. Gov. Brian Schweitzer also spoke, along with two Montana university students.

The speakers highlighted the importance of understanding the global society and the opportunities that may arise because of that understanding.
