Going off the (cable) grid

A few years back, I came to the realization that paying over $110 for my cable TV, Internet and phone package seemed a little obscene. I knew that it was possible to break away from the ubiquitous cable company "bundle-and-save" model, but I wasn’t sure if I could live without my HBO and live sporting events (mainly the NFL; does anyone still watch MLB or NBA?).
Three years later and I’m still happy to be free of the cable TV/phone bills and TV commercials. There are some drawbacks, but the gains far outweigh the losses. Here’s how it’s done (this guide is oversimplified, so search Google when in doubt):
