Manufacturing future looks bright for local corporations in Central Montana – Spika Welding, Allied Steel, and HCR

"The history of manufacturing begins with the word itself, to manufacture, meaning to make by hand," said writer John Briggs. As Lewistown looks toward a future of economic growth and development, a primary driving factor and good indicator of the health of the local economy is the strength of the area’s manufacturing sector.

Dr. Jim Chalmers, Vice-Chairman of the Fergus County Port Authority, has stressed the importance of manufacturing as a driving force in a rural economy. Chalmers is a retired economist with over 30 years of experience in addressing economic development in rural communities across the western states.

"Bigger manufacturing businesses are very important driving components for small towns," said Chalmers, in a prior interview with the News-Argus. "When those businesses are doing well, it feeds back into the community."
