Bozeman, Montana author releases first novel to great acclaim – "The Royal Wulff Murders"

Using his cotton underwear for tinder as he huddled beneath a pile of twigs miles up Bozeman Creek on a single-digit night, Keith McCafferty decided it was time he wrote a book.

He undertook the survival night with just the clothes on his back, a tarp and a fire-starting flint on yet another assignment for Field and Stream magazine.

"That was a very long night," he said Thursday, sitting in a much warmer Café Francais des Arts – one of McCafferty’s many "offices."

"I shivered all night long," he said.

That was about four years ago.
