Rail Supporters Fight To Keep Service In Bitterroot Valley of Montana

It’s an anxious time for businesses that use rail service in Ravalli County. Montana Rail Link says its Bitterroot tracks are running on a $250,000 deficit.

MRL suspended service last May and could permanently close the tracks in April. Meantime, business and community leaders are scrambling for ways to keep the trains going.

Pfau Feeds has been a landmark business near Stevensville for decades. When Scott Kurfman bought the mill a few years ago, the rail line a quarter mile away was a big plus.

"But if I don’t have the rail line it actually devalued my business," said Kurfman. Since MRL suspended service, Kurfman’s been leasing rail space in Missoula. He’s thankful, but he says his business costs increased significantly.
