Governor names Krauss, Williams as regents

Bozeman City Commissioner Jeff Krauss was surprised when he got a phone call 5 p.m. Tuesday from Gov. Brian Schweitzer, asking if he would serve on the Montana Board of Regents.

"It was a bolt out of the blue," Krauss said Wednesday from his basement office at the Museum of the Rockies, where he works as director of finance and administration.

Former Congressman Williams appointed to Montana Board of Regents

Gov. Brian Schweitzer appointed former Congressman Pat Williams to serve on the Montana Board of Regents on Wednesday.

The appointment comes less than a month after Williams retired from teaching at the University of Montana and serving as a fellow with the O’Connor Center for the Rocky Mountain West. News of the appointment came as a surprise to Williams on Tuesday, the day before it was announced. The nine-term U.S. representative from Missoula didn’t apply for the volunteer post nor has he expressed interests to the governor about serving as a regent.

"I gently tried to talk him out of it, frankly," Williams said.
