University of Montana ultra endurance researcher tests himself

As part of its research, the Montana Center for Work Physiology and Exercise Metabolism at the University of Montana studied athletes at the Ironman World Championship in Hawaii, the Western States 100-Mile Endurance Run in California and the Badwater Ultramarathon, a 135-mile race from Death Valley to Mount Whitney in California.

They found that runners in the Western States run burn some 16,000 calories, or the equivalent of 30 Big Macs.

Ironman athletes need 12 liters of water during the Hawaii race, and runners in the Badwater burn almost 10 times the amount of calories a person would need if he were lying around all day.
