Exploring the future – Montana State University hosts National Geographic workshop on adventure grants

The event informed local students about National Geographic grants available for people ages 18 to 25. It was the 11th workshop National Geographic has held at colleges across the country.

With its strong film school and environmental sciences programs, Montana State University is a prime candidate to produce future National Geographic explorers, which was part of the reason the nonprofit decided to hold a workshop in Bozeman, said John Francis, vice president of research, conservation and exploration with National Geographic.

It also helped that National Geographic has a number of representatives hailing from Bozeman, like Conrad Anker and photographer Gordon Wiltsie.

About National Geographic’s Young Explorers grants

People ages 18 to 25 are eligible to receive up to $5,000 through National Geographic’s Young Explorers Grant program.

The program is separated into three areas: the Committee for Research and Exploration, which funds hypothesis-based scientific research; the Conservation Trust, which funds conservation projects that may be applied around the world; and the Expeditions Council, which funds treks and journeys around the world with strong visual and narrative potential.

National Geographic has given out about $825,000 in four-and-a-half years through 185 Young Explorers grants.
