Governors’ Actions Moving States Toward a Cleaner Energy Future

During 2011, states and territories continued to support the development and deployment of clean energy technologies according to a National Governors Association (NGA) report, Clean State Energy Actions, released today.

Despite facing tepid economic growth, states remained active, with all states taking one or more actions to advance clean energy options. Spurring economic growth and reducing energy costs to consumers were strong motivators for states’ support of clean energy. Other drivers included diversifying energy sources and reducing emissions. Specific areas of high activity included efforts to promote alternative fuels and vehicles for energy efficiency and clean electricity.

"Economic development remains a top priority for the nation’s governors and it goes hand-in-hand with clean energy technologies," said NGA Vice Chair and the NGA Center Board Chair Delaware Gov. Jack Markell. "This report shows that every state and territory is working to advance clean energy and that states recognize the energy sector offers an opportunity to stimulate growth."
