States weaken tenure rights for teachers – Group gives Montana a flunking grade for teacher policies

America’s public school teachers are seeing their generations-old tenure protections weakened as states seek flexibility to fire teachers who aren’t performing. A few states have essentially nullified tenure protections altogether, according to an analysis being released Wednesday by the National Council on Teacher Quality.

A group that analyzes teacher quality gives Montana flunking grades for its policies in identifying and preparing effective teachers.

The National Council on Teacher Quality also gives the state low marks for its policies on retaining effective teachers and getting rid of the ineffective ones.
