California utilities unveil ‘Green Button’ system

Aneesh Chopra, the Obama administration’s chief technology officer, visited Silicon Valley on Wednesday to celebrate the launch of the "Green Button" http://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2011/11/21/empowering-customers-green-button– an online tool that lets consumers download energy usage data from their utility’s website in an easy, standard format.

"Consumers physically take possession of their energy data when they download it with the Green Button," Chopra said. "If they choose, they can physically share it by uploading it. You’re going to see the market evolve in Internet speed."
