Montana commissioner of higher education, Clayton Christian, chosen for leadership skills – Critics question short search

Before October, Montana Board of Regent http://mus.edu/board/ Chairman Clayton Christian had never considered applying for the Montana commissioner of higher education job, a position he was charged with filling.

Commissioner Sheila Stearns, who served in that role since 2003, announced last May her intention to retire upon the regents finding a replacement. Led by Christian, the board hired an outside consultant to help with the candidate search and visited the campuses around the state, soliciting feedback from professors, students and administrators about what they’d they would like to see in the state’s next top higher education official. As it turns out, the regents all had a particular kind of person in mind.

Critics question short search for new higher ed chief

Over Christmas break, it took the Montana Board of Regents only a week to identify, interview and announce the next commissioner of higher education.

The job was never opened or advertised publicly before the board hired its own chairman, Clayton Christian.
