For Seattle resident, Zipcar service a perfect fit

Valentina Barei keeps up a lifestyle in Seattle that makes it easy to be carless. For one thing, she lives alone.

"I’m not trying to haul home stuff to feed teenage boys," Barei said.

Barei is a friend of Patrick Little in Missoula, and he’s trying to start a car share program here. Barei herself has belonged to one, Zipcar, for more than four years. At one point, she planned to buy a car after she totaled her 1968 Volkswagen, but she doesn’t anymore.

Barei lives in a condominium in downtown Seattle, and she takes mass transit to work. She can usually walk to get groceries or see a doctor. On occasion, though, she picks up a Zipcar instead.

"For me, the Zipcar service is great for runs where I have to pick up more groceries or more things … than I would carry home," Barei said. "If I’m going to Costco. If I’m going to buy 25 pounds of cat litter. If I’m planning a party and I realize, oh hey, I should probably get a couple cold packs of soda."
