Intel offers retiring employees a $25,000 incentive to go back to work — for nonprofits

Retirement evokes thoughts of taking it easy — sunny vacations and quiet mornings without the hustle of career life. For Cheryl Edmonds, 60, retirement began a new kind of career.

After 18 years as a field engineer and marketer, Edmonds started work at Metropolitan Family Service, a Southeast Portland group that works to help low-income families develop literacy and good health habits. Edmonds’ old employer, Hewlett-Packard Co., provided a $20,000 stipend to steer her and other retirees toward using their professional skills in community work.

"A lot of folks who are attracted to this sort of thing come out of the corporate life," Edmonds said.
