Centers in Great Falls and Missoula help young parents build positive environment for children

When 17-year-old Katelyn Brutosky found out she was pregnant in September 2010, she realized that parenthood was already stressful — even before her son Landon was born.

"I didn’t know how I was going to raise a kid," Brutosky said.

She eventually was referred to the Young Parents’ Education Center 2400 Central Ave
Great Falls MT 406-268-6665 , a local nonprofit that is housed in the Paris Gibson Education Center and serves mostly high-school-age parents and parents-to-be from around Great Falls. Brutosky was soon enrolled in a prenatal education class with expectant moms in similar situations, and it wasn’t long before she didn’t feel so alone, she said.

Thanks to information from Susan Hay Patrick at United Way, Missoula has resources and programs for young parents:

Naomi Thornton at WORD runs the Futures program there, for teen parents. [email protected]

The Futures program was designed in 1989 to address the educational, vocational, and parenting needs of pregnant and/or parenting youth in Missoula County. From its modest beginnings, the project has grown to be a model family support program for young parents.
