Montana Career Opportunity – Development Director – Indian Law Resource Center

The Indian Law Resource Center, an international American Indian human rights
organization based in Helena, Montana, seeks a development director to manage all
activities related to the planning, implementation, and evaluation of fund raising for the
organization.

The person will report to the Executive Director and will work as a
member of the senior management team with the staff and Board of Directors to
coordinate foundation fund raising and develop new sources of support, including tribes,
individual donors, planned and corporate giving, and special events.

The development
director will share some responsibilities with the communications staff for activities to
enhance the overall mission and visibility of the Indian Law Resource Center. We are an

Specific responsibilities include:

1. Create and implement a development plan annually to provide financial support
for the Center’s mission.

2. Plan and coordinate the work of all staff in regard to fund raising.

3. Identify and research potential individual, foundation, tribal, and corporate donors
and develop plans for their cultivation.

4. Develop and implement a plan for major gift development, including a planned
giving program.

5. Write and prepare materials for fund raising and, to some extent, communications
purposes.

6. Supervise 1 or 2 development associates.

7. Research and evaluate new developments in fund raising and recommend those
that show promise to the Executive Director.

8. Effectively employ the talents and contacts of staff and Board to develop their
understanding of fund raising and build the resources of the Indian Law Resource
Center.

Qualifications

The development director will have at least 5 years of demonstrated successful
experience in non-profit development; excellent planning, writing, budgeting, editing and
oral communication skills; supervisory experience; a collaborative work style that also
exhibits initiative; a creative, assertive approach to fund raising; computer and data base
literacy; the ability to travel nationally; a minimum of a BA/BS degree; and a general
understanding of and commitment to Indian and Alaska Native rights.

established and directed by American Indians. We provide legal assistance without
charge to Indian and Alaska Native nations that are working to protect their land,
resources, human rights, environment, and cultural heritage. Our principal goal is the
preservation and well-being of Indian and other Native nations and tribes.

Founded in 1978, the Center provides assistance to tribes and other indigenous
peoples in the United States and in Central and South America. The Center has an
international Board of Directors, and it is a Non-Governmental Organization in

Law Resource Center is a tax-exempt organization under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal
Revenue Code. We are funded entirely by grants and contributions from Indian nations,
