Student entrepreneurs sprouting up on Oregon campuses, eager to create their own job market
Kenny King started classes at the University of Portland as the first signs of a slumping economy started making national headlines.
Three years later it’s defined his school years, having watched a succession of classmates walk away with diplomas but without jobs.
So King created his own. He’ll graduate in May as co-founder of Global Ade, a nonprofit that pulled in more than $19,000 at its first fundraiser earlier this year.
Enterprising college students aren’t leaving their fates to a bruising job market that has stymied their earning power and pitted them against a larger and more experienced labor pool. Waves of them are striking out on their own, and colleges are taking note.
