Emerging technology: Metal-munching yeast a biological solution for mine pollution. It all started with an abandoned open pit mine in Butte, Mont.

Most people associate yeast with a tasty slice of sourdough bread, but if a Salt Lake City-based company’s research and development pans out, yeast will be used to clean up mining waste. And the company stands to make a lot of dough.

In February 2011, the Utah Science Technology and Research initiative awarded Weber State University a $35,000 technology commercialization grant to assist US BioRemediation Inc. http://www.bioremediationinc.com/ in verifying that a metal-loving microbe might address the needs of a $500 million domestic market.
