Small, Local Businesses Speed Income Growth – Density Brings in More Tax Income Than Big Box

Bear Paw Development Corporation is a private non-profit organization created for the purpose of administering programs to help improve regional economic conditions in Hill, Blaine, Liberty, Chouteau and Phillips Counties and the Fort Belknap and Rocky Boy's Indian Reservations.

Researchers at Penn State University have found that smaller, locally-owned businesses are better for growing incomes in a county than the presence of larger companies or big box stores owned outside the county.

Density Brings in More Tax Income Than Big Box

A new economic study commissioned by a regional land planning institute says local governments have the potential to get more bang for their tax-return buck down on Main Street than at the big-box retail centers.

When compared on a basis of tax revenue per acre, the dense, mixed-use urban development pays better dividends than its large-format suburban mall counterpart, concludes the study prepared for the Sonoran Institute’s Colorado program, which is based in Glenwood Springs.
