In an apparent effort to relieve concerns about the length of time (currently about 34 months on average) and inefficiencies involved in acquiring a patent, in mid-May, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office made available to all applicants for non-reissue, nonprovisional utility patent applications a program aimed at speeding up the patent prosecution process by engaging the applicant and examiner early on in the process.
