GlaxoSmithKline continues to expand its drug research, operations in Hamilton, Montana

Thirty years ago, four Bitterroot scientists had a dream.

They believed that hidden away in the cell wall of a certain bacteria, there were all the components necessary to produce a material with the power to stimulate the immune system and possibly save millions of lives.

Starting in a tiny garage converted into a laboratory, the four began groundbreaking work that would eventually lead to the discovery of the adjuvant Monophosphoryl Lipid A, or MPL.

Adjuvants enhance a vaccine’s ability to elicit a strong response from the immune system.
