THIS WEEKEND- Friday, Saturday, Sunday- April 15, 16, 17

Nearly 1,000 youth across Montana will be volunteering this weekend for Global Youth Service Day (http://www.gysd.org), an annual campaign that celebrates and mobilizes youth across the country and the world who improve their communities each day of the year through service and service-learning. The Governor's Office of Community Service (serve.mt.gov) for the 7th year serves as the Lead Agency for Global Youth Service Day Events this weekend, April 15-17.

"We want to get as many young people as possible involved in Global Youth Service Day," said Jan Lombardi, Director of the Governor's Office of Community Service. "Volunteering in your community when you are young creates a strong commitment to service for life."

The Governor's Office of Community Service awarded 17 mini-grants in 14 communities for projects that involve community service activities for youths.

"We are using our mini-grant award to purchase two Amur chokecherry trees and landscaping edging," said Jennifer McKay, Junior Girl Scout Troop Leader in Dillon and mini-grant recipient. "We believe these trees and our project will make the Children's Park and Robert Monaco Memorial Playhouse a more appealing place for kids to come and play."

The public is encouraged to volunteer with the children and youth in their community. Projects include: foot path restorations, building recycling bins, creating community gardens, planting trees and flowers, creating hero packs for kids in military families, trail restoration and more.

The Governor's Office of Community Service is a Lead Agency for Global Youth Service Day through Youth Service America (ysa.org), an international nonprofit resource center that partners with thousands of organizations to expand the impact of the youth service movement.
