Guest opinion: Encourage legislators to focus on K-12 schools' needs

As we near the end of the 2011 Legislature, with 10 days left as of Monday, legislators are going to have to switch into high gear if they are going to adjourn having met the needs of K-12 public education. A key problem at this point is that in addition to several legislators from both parties who are working hard to craft solutions for K-12 public education, there are a handful of legislators who appear to be intent on holding K-12 school funding hostage as a means of seeking advantage for House Bill 603, a deeply flawed charter school bill currently pending before the Senate Education Committee.
