Editorial: Attract new industries with an educated Montana workforce

This Legislature was supposed to be all about jobs. Unemployment in Montana remains high and lawmakers from both parties are looking for ways to bring more jobs to the state. Some want to cut business taxes. Others are looking to clarify eminent domain laws. Environmental laws have been modified in favor of industry and regulations have been minimized.

The one issue that remains to be addressed is funding education. Governor Schweitzer proposed increasing educational spending through a series of money transfers from various state accounts. Republicans have also proposed a modest increase, though with fewer transfers. Neither side agrees on how it should be done.
