VC puts up $250k for university spinouts

Many venture capitalists will tell you the quality of the entrepreneur is at least as important as that entrepreneur’s product or idea, if not more. With the inaugural tech transfer event TechStorm, Amplifier Ventures is taking that notion to its logical extreme.

The full-day conference, held June 2 at George Mason University and produced by InnovateTech Ventures, will match representatives from about two dozen universities and labs with entrepreneurs, investors and corporations looking to license new technologies. Cohost Amplifier, an early-stage venture fund based in McLean, is putting up as much as $250,000 in seed funding for a handful of pre-screened entrepreneurs to build companies around the intellectual property they find at the event.
