Next 10 years look better than last for Eastern Montana

The lonesome prairie of Eastern Montana got a little lonelier in the last 10 years, according to the 2010 census.

Twenty-one of 31 counties east of a north-south line from Hill to Park counties lost population, while only two — Yellowstone and Stillwater — made substantial gains.

But there are resilient pockets holding ground against the urbanization of the West and the lure of mountain views. And many who live in these middle-of-nowhere counties believe that the next 10 years will be different.
