New Horizon Technologies, Inc. awarded $1.85MM for market assessments, related services

The MarkeTech Research Center, a division of Butte, MT-based New Horizon Technologies, Inc., http://www.newhorizontech.com/ has won a five-year, $1.85 million competitive bid to continue performing in-depth market assessments and related services in support of technologies funded by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Inventions & Innovation Program.

The MarkeTech Research Center has a lengthy history of performing market and commercialization assessments on emerging technologies. The Center performed its first assessment for the Inventions & Innovation Program (formerly the Energy-Related Inventions Program) in 1992 as one of several organizations competing for the work. According to Elliott Levine, former Program Manager, the MarkeTech Research Center’s final report was "a generation above" anything else they received.

"The key to our assessments," said John Balsam, Director of the MarkeTech Research Center, "is that our efforts are market-based, rather than focused on the innovation’s technical aspects. Like a venture capitalist, we strive to objectively address how the market will respond to the new technology." According to Balsam, this approach involves exploring the technology’s market and competitive environments and identifying critical market-entry barriers and opportunities. He added that the Center works closely with each client to make sure there is full understanding of what the research is designed to achieve, thereby avoiding surprises and misunderstandings later in the project.

"An objective market assessment on a new technology can be incredibly valuable," says John McBride, President of New Horizon Technologies, Inc. "Entrepreneurs have used our reports to develop new marketing plans, adjust existing plans, and attract seed capital for further development and commercialization. An added benefit is the list of contacts made during our assessment process. These contacts represent new, qualified, and often interested marketing leads for the entrepreneur."

Since 1992, the Center has completed in-depth market assessments on nearly 250 technologies in a wide range of areas and for sponsors in both the public and private sectors. The MarkeTech Research Center has also developed hundreds of "tech briefs," performed business/commercialization reviews on scores of funding proposals, and participated in numerous in-depth, multi-day technology commercialization workshops.
