Montana State University Leadership Institute Hosts Academy Award Winner, Dustin Lance Black – Gay screenwriter urges fight for equal rights

Dustin Lance Black grew up in a conservative Mormon family and lived on military bases in Texas, yet when he was 6 years old he realized that he liked boys.

Instead of wanting to punch the kid who stole his toy car, Black said, he had a crush and wanted to kiss him.

He knew homosexuality was condemned by his church as a sin and scorned by his dad’s military buddies with words like faggot. As a boy, he felt his choices were to hide his shameful secret or take his own life.

"I thought about it constantly," Black said. "I knew I was going to hell."
