Foundations partner on Montana Early Care Initiative

Last year a group of funders, including Philanthropy Northwest members The O.P. & W.E. Edwards Foundation, Oro y Plata Foundation and Dennis and Phyllis Washington Foundation, began exploring the hurdles that prevent low-income rural and reservation families from accessing high quality, affordable childcare in Montana. Those conversations culminated in a partnership with the Big Sky Institute for the Advancement of Nonprofits (BSI), state agencies and leaders in Montana’s early childhood development field to launch the Montana Early Care Initiative http://services.philanthropynw.org/pressroom/MTWYebulletin/0211/EarlyCare_Primer.pdf .

"Understanding the complex issues surrounding early childcare and learning in Montana is difficult for individual foundations," said Jean Agather, manager of the Oro y Plata Foundation. "The Montana Early Care Initiative is providing funders with a learning group to explore ways to improve early childcare in Montana. As we investigate solutions, we may find natural areas for collaboration."
