Intern Sought for Montana Economic Developers Association Innovative Working Group Project

Tasks:

Assist the MEDA http://www.medamembers.org Innovation Working Group to achieve its mission to: "Identify innovations and strategic opportunities that would feed into the effort to refine Montana’s economic development model including our programs, tools, approach, and our vision."

1. Research, compare and contrast innovative economic development models and tools being developed and/or used by other states in the intermountain west. i.e., Idaho, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Idaho, Colorado and Canada.

2. Research, compare and contrast innovative economic development models and tools being developed and/or used by other states and countries. Focus should be on models similar to Montana, i.e., rural state, historically natural resources focused economy, lack of major city, significant distance to major city, distance to markets, part-time legislature, etc. Suggested: Maine, Kentucky, Iowa, Nebraska and Kansas.

3. Provide a brief overview of each model and/or tool identified including location, longevity of model or program, key economic development issues addressed, execution strategies, evaluation tools used and reportable successes. Provide contact information for key program directors.

4. Provide a final summary and report both in a word-type document and powerpoint format or whatever mutually agreed upon media is best suited to present the information in the most effective manner.

Qualifications:

Senior-level undergraduate or a graduate-level student majoring in Business or Public Policy or similar fields of study. Qualifications must also include computer literacy, writing, communication skills, work independently, previous experience with similar project, ability to work virtually and statement of interest. Resume to be included. More important than field of study is genuine interest in exploring innovative economic development models and practices. MEDA is willing to coordinate as needed for credit purposes.

Timeline:

o Respond to this request electronically by noon, February 11th by emailing [email protected] or call 406.563.5259.

o Mid February – Participate in conference call to define Scope of Work

o First week of March – Participate in MEDA Innovative Working Group conference call to provide brief update, Q & A

o Report to the MEDA contact point at least once every ten days

o First week in April – preliminary findings and draft report ready for review

MEDA represents over 230 members who are actively involved in local economic activity,
community development, job retention and job creation for Montana.

Payment: $1,500 minimum of 100 hours
