Online classes from the Montana Digital Academy open to everyone

The Butte school board changed its policy Tuesday to allow home and private school students to take classes through a new state Internet learning program despite objections from district teachers.

Last month Butte teachers objected to the proposal because it allows all high school students to take classes rather than just upper class students. Teachers also complained the policy would allow students to take classes online that are also offered at the school and that could eventually cost faculty jobs.

But Superintendent Linda Reksten warned the board that a lawsuit was imminent from taxpayers with kids who wanted to take classes last fall and were shut out. The previous policy required students to be enrolled at Butte High for a minimum of four classes.

Reksten said the district will revisit the policy within months depending on what the state Legislature does to the Montana Digital Academy http://www.montanadigitalacademy.org/ .
