One school’s answer to "Why International Baccalaureate?"

To paraphrase one of our board members, you expect to receive modern and up to date medical and surgical procedures; why should your expectations be any less for the education of your children?

Riverstone International School http://www.riverstoneschool.org/ in Boise, Idaho, USA was Idaho’s first International Baccalaureate (IB) http://www.ibo.org/ World School and is currently one of a small number of schools in the United States authorized to offer all three IB Programmes. Head of School, Andrew Derry, responds to the question, "Why IB?"

Riverstone International School chose the International Baccalaureate (IB) as the core to its programs and philosophy because it is widely considered to be the most rigorous and relevant educational program, built on modern pedagogical and brain research that shows us clearly how students think and learn best. More than likely, this integrated, contextual approach to teaching and learning will be different to the education that most parents experienced at school. Rather than concentrating on knowledge and repetition, the IB focuses on higher orders of thinking such as analysis, synthesis, and evaluation. While too many school systems still cling to the same traditional approaches to education used 30 years ago, Riverstone is different.
