Montana Business Leaders Tell Legislators How Best To Improve Business Climate – GOP leaders say message received

From farmers to miners to ice-cream shop owners, business people converged on the Capitol Saturday to bring a diverse message to state lawmakers on how best to create jobs, saying government can be both a negative and a positive influence.

For the natural-resource industry, the message was loud and clear: Don’t regulate us to death, and do create rules and a regulatory climate that are predictable and fair.

About 100 business people testified at a series of four hearings moderated by legislative leaders.

GOP leaders say message received

Leaders of the Republican legislative majorities said they heard the message from Montana business people Saturday and will work to cut regulatory red tape to make it easier for projects to get permits.

They also announced that appropriations subcommittees today will begin the job of cutting a combined total of $360 million to $380 million from the state general fund budget to align the ongoing spending with with ongoing revenues.

About 100 business owners and executives from across the state appeared before legislative committees Saturday to discuss what changes need to be made to put Montanans back to work.
