Speaking up for the voiceless in Montana – Disability Rights Montana

Shawnee DeMers made the call on a Saturday last May.

While a patient at Montana State Hospital in Warm Springs, DeMers said she was left in restraints for more than four hours. The incident triggered past trauma and prompted a frantic message to Disability Rights Montana http://www.disabilityrightsmt.org/.

Advocacy specialist Charlie McCarthy arrived the following Monday to investigate DeMers’ complaint, and to speak against mistreatment on her behalf.

"He was there every week to check on me," DeMers said. "He’s like an angel."

"A lot of these people don’t have a voice," McCarthy said. "They need somebody to understand where they are, and not what they did in the past."
