Requirement that students be enrolled in Butte, Montana schools in order to take online classes tabled

The Butte school board returned to the drawing board Monday with a policy that would bar Butte Central and home-schooled kids in the district from taking Internet classes through a state-sponsored program.

The decision to table the new policy came after state Rep. Jon Sesso, D-Butte, said he’d heard from constituents who are miffed over a requirement that students be enrolled at Butte High to take classes from the fledgling Montana Digital Academy. Sesso said that the Legislature intended for any state resident to be able to take the program and keeping kids out could jeopardize the program in the upcoming session.

"One of the reasons that it passed and it was funded was that it was intended to be available to all," Sesso told the board Monday. "We are facing resistance and push back from people who are not allowed in."
