Blue Marble Announces Memorandum of Understanding for Distribution of Sustainable Biochemicals through Sigma-Aldrich

Blue Marble Biomaterials http://www.bluemarblebio.com and Sigma-Aldrich Corporation (Nasdaq:SIAL) have
signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU), under which Sigma-Aldrich will distribute
several of Blue Marble Biomaterials’ sustainable biochemicals. Blue Marble expects to begin
shipments to Sigma-Aldrich in Q1 2011.

"This MoU marks the first step to bring Blue Marble’s renewable chemicals to mainstream
markets in commercial volume," says Kelly Ogilvie, CEO of Blue Marble. Sigma-Aldrich will be
the first distributor to offer Blue Marble’s petroleum-free, sustainably produced chemicals
alongside traditionally produced chemicals. Blue Marble’s technology utilizes natural plant
matter and managed ecosystems of non-GMO (genetically modified organism) bacteria to
produce biochemical compounds. Under the MoU, Sigma-Aldrich will offer Blue Marble its
quality control and quality assurance protocol expertise for the company’s new facility in
Corvallis, Montana.

"Aligning with Sigma-Aldrich’s Global Citizenship Initiative, this new partnership with Blue
Marble Biomaterials continues to strengthen and broaden Sigma-Aldrich’s commitment to
provide environmentally responsible products that meet our customers’ needs while minimizing
energy required in production and reducing or eliminating waste," said Steve Walton, Vice
President of EH&S, Corporate Compliance and Sustainability at Sigma-Aldrich.
