Recent Montana State University graduate, Dora Hugs, a teacher and Crow elder from Pryor, Montana, named top non-traditional student in the West

A recent Montana State University graduate has been named Outstanding Non-traditional Student in the Western United States. Dora Hugs, a teacher and Crow elder from Pryor, received the award at a regional meeting of the University Professional and Continuing Education Association.

Hugs, 51, is a teacher at St. Charles Mission School in Pryor and graduated from MSU in August with a master’s degree in science education. She also enrolled in MSU’s Big Sky Science Partnership program http://www.umt.edu/bssp/ , which is funded by the National Science Foundation and designed to strengthen K-8 science instruction by developing science content knowledge, teaching practice and leadership skills of science teachers in Montana communities that teach American Indian students. She later entered and completed the Master of Science in Science Education (MSSE) program while working as a full-time teacher.

As the region’s top non-traditional student, Hugs is eligible to become the country’s top non-traditional student, an honor that will be announced at the national UPCEA meeting in April. She is the first student ever nominated by MSU for the outstanding non-traditional student award.
