Gazette opinion: Vote for your educational values Nov. 2 "The State with the Best Education Wins!"

Legislators elected Tuesday will decide how much money the state’s K-12 schools have to spend in the next two academic years.

The Nov. 2 General Election is really a school election, too.

The 2011 Legislature also will decide how much state money will be appropriated to the Montana University System, including Montana State University Billings, Miles Community College and Dawson Community College.

Don’t local school boards set elementary and high school budgets? Yes, but they can only spend money already appropriated or authorized by the Legislature. The Legislature determines in the biennial budget how much state aid, including federal aid passed through the state, will go to schools. The Legislature also determines how much local property tax money can be used, if local voters support a May levy.
