University of Texas at Arlington trying to inspire math, science majors to teach

David Arogunmati is a biology major with plans to become an emergency medicine doctor. But when he’s done studying at the University of Texas at Arlington, he hopes to also have a teacher’s certificate.

The 18-year-old freshman is among 90 students who signed up for a new UT-Arlington program aimed at producing more high school math and science teachers. Experts said strong demand for these teachers is fueled by an aging work force and an increased focus to educate students better in these subjects.

Science and math majors are recruited for UTeach Arlington, which enables students to weave teaching experience and coursework into their college curriculum. Students start with elementary education training and then build up to high school education while still majoring in math or science fields.
