Prop. 23 may threaten budding clean-tech firms in California
California’s innovative energy policies helped lure Eric Dresselhuys’ clean-tech company, Silver Spring Networks, to the state.
Founded in Wisconsin in 2002, Silver Spring moved here the following year because, for companies dealing in renewable power, alternative fuels and energy efficiency, California was the place to be. The Golden State had venture capitalists willing to fund those technologies and public officials eager to encourage them with favorable policies.
"The companies come here and the jobs get created here because this is the place that’s on the leading edge of implementing these new technologies," said Dresselhuys, whose Redwood City company makes equipment and software for improving electricity distribution, including electric "smart meters."
Now Proposition 23 on the November ballot threatens to change the state’s nurturing environment for green companies.
