Sen. Baucus’ Small Business Jobs Law Delivers Boost To Montana Companies

Senator Announces Increased Access to Capital to Help Support Montana jobs

Montana’s senior U.S. Senator Max Baucus announced today that Montana businesses are now benefiting, growing and hiring additional workers thanks to the Small Business Jobs Act he championed last month.

"Montana’s small businesses are the lifeblood of our communities which is why it’s so important to give them all the tools they need to drive our economy forward and create the good-paying jobs Montanans deserve," said Baucus. "I’m so pleased to see this smart investment going to work for Montana’s tireless entrepreneurs."

Joanie Swords, who is remodeling the old 10th Avenue Market building in Billings, plans to open a neighborhood deli, bakery and specialty food store, Harper and Madison, in December. "I am so inspired to see my small business vision one step closer to reality," said Swords. "We are so thrilled to be moving forward on this project which we believe will boost this historic neighborhood in Billings and add value to our community in general." Swords estimates around 8 jobs were created throughout the remodeling/construction process and she is planning to hire three full time employees and three part time employees.

Carrie Johnson who is starting a new small business in Great Falls said, "This is allowing me to fulfill a life-long dream of mine which is opening my own floral studio in my hometown of Great Falls." Johnson’s business, My Viola, is slated to open in December and will specialize in weddings and community events and will offer courses in floral design. Johnson says several jobs were created out of the renovation and construction process and she will hire two employees.

"I’m thankful for this opportunity to help us increase and grow business," said Cindy Nielson, owner of Sidney Cleaners and Laundry in Sidney. "This allows us to continue to serve our community while investing in our operations."

Baucus wrote the Small Business Jobs Act which was signed into law September 27, 2010. The legislation gives the nation’s small businesses support and incentives to help them grow and hire employees. Thanks to the legislation, the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) was able to release loans to nearly 2,000 small businesses across the nation that had been waiting or had loan applications on hold since the end of May.

"Having heard from folks across the state, it’s clear to me that if we can respond to the needs of our hard-working small business owners, we can really get Montana’s economy moving forward one business and one job at a time," said Baucus.

Baucus’ Small Business Jobs Act cleared the approval of SBA-backed loans for seven Montana businesses.
