Unaware of Our Unawareness

"I’ll know it when I see it," runs the
popular refrain.

It’s been used to explain how
we can recognize everything from obscenity to
true love. But how much can we trust what we
see or, rather, what we think we see? For
decades, cognitive psychologists have been
discovering that there is more going on in our
brains than we could ever be consciously
aware of, even for a moment. The simple tasks
of everyday life are so complex that they
would overwhelm us if we had to supervise
them all the time.
