MSU worries as regents seek incentives to boost graduation

Everybody agrees it would be great if more Montana college students would stay in school and graduate, instead of dropping out, as more than half do today.

But the way the Montana Board of Regents is thinking of promoting that goal has already sparked controversy.

The rough idea sketched out for Montana State University professors and administrators Wednesday calls for giving each state campus a big incentive – money – to reach such goals.

The Board of Regents may endorse the general idea next week at its two-day meeting in Butte

Under the "performance-based funding" proposal, the number of students who complete their classes could determine how millions of dollars are divvied up between state campuses.
